Climate change has become one of the most pressing challenges of our time, and the world is united in its goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. At Gemfont, we have already taken significant steps by conducting greenhouse gas inventories and formulating robust carbon reduction strategies. With the completion of solar photovoltaic power systems and long-term renewable energy supply contracts, Gemfont operations have been powered with renewable energy since 2023 and we aim to achieve our carbon reduction target with 100% renewable energy use by 2025.

Energy And Water Resource Management

On our energy and water resource management policies, Gemfont has been focused on optimizing our energy and water resource management policies since 2021, guided by two key directions and a prioritized timeline.

Conduct a comprehensive review of facilities and equipment related to energy and water resource usage, inventory relevant data and applications, and optimize energy efficiency in phases.
Launch green electricity procurement and supplier evaluation plans, combining corporate energy-saving measures and self-generated green electricity to achieve our goal of 100% RE.

Carbon Management

In 2021, with guidance from Deloitte Taiwan, Gemfont initiated a greenhouse gas inventory. The first phase focused on our Wugu plants, where Gemfont received the ISO 14064-1:2018 Greenhouse Gas Verification Statement issued by SGS in June 2022. The second phase of the inventory process began in Q4 2022. In addition to completing the greenhouse gas inventory for the entire Gemfont Group, we have set specific carbon reduction targets and timelines, including:

Based on the ISO 14064-1:2018 inventory results, our carbon reduction task force has set short, medium and long-term targets, integrating them into the daily operations of every Gemfont employee.
Completed green electricity projects at our Tainan Logistics Center and Zhongli Production Logistics Center in 2022 and 2023.
Signed long-term green electricity supply contracts with suppliers in 2022.
In 2023, we updated the cooling system at our Wugu plant, replacing the water-cooled system with a inverter air-conditioning system, which is projected to achieve 36% in energy savings.
Starting in 2023, we are upgrading the lighting fixtures at our Wugu plants to energy-saving LED systems over a three-year period, with full completion expected by 2025.

Packaging Management

In recent years, global trends of reducing plastics, waste minimization and recycling have become environmental issues that enterprises must address proactively. Enhancing the sustainability of product packaging is a key focus for Gemfont. Our management team is expanding our inventory and review of daily office supplies, actively planning and executing reduction strategies and choosing environmentally friendly packaging materials.

For paper products (cardboard packaging, office paper, sanitary paper…etc.), we have converted to suppliers certified by FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) or PEFC (Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification).
Initiated packaging reduction programs to cut down on unnecessary dividers, folded bags and strapping bands, expected to achieve 36%, 5%, and 5% packaging reductions, respectively.
Plastic packaging will be included in project discussions, with assessments and implementations of sustainable packaging initiatives while maintaining food safety as a top priority.

Food Safety

As a leading upstream raw material supplier in Taiwan's food industry, Gemfont holds a pivotal position within the food supply chain. This role comes with significant responsibilities, as reflected in our approach to food safety management:

Established a Food Safety Committee to develop and oversee relevant policies and improve management strategies.
Comply with regulatory requirements by formulating comprehensive food safety policies and standards.
Review and enhance Gemfont’s food safety management systems along with relevant infrastructure.
Regularly assess major domestic and international food safety issues to proactively implement preventive measures.
Keeping employees informed and educated on changes and updates to domestic food regulations in a timely manner.

We have also expanded Gemfont’s Quality Assurance Laboratories to align with international management standards:
Since 2013, Gemfont’s laboratories have been TAF-certified as a testing laboratory and recognized by the Ministry of Health and Welfare for food inspection.
In 2021, we launched a Level 2 Biosafety Laboratory that meets ANSI/NSF49 international standards. This lab is equipped with BSC biosafety cabinets, allowing us to handle RG2 food pathogens. Gemfont is among the selected few food materials suppliers in Taiwan with such advanced biosafety facilities.
In 2024, we will establish our second Quality Assurance Laboratory in Zhongli, expanding its scale by 1.5 times.

Quality Control

Gemfont is committed to rigorously upholding our food safety and quality policy: “Enhancing quality, enforcing responsibility; ensuring safe and healthy products.” We operate various production lines, including halal foods, liquids, sauces, powders and granules.

Rigorous quality control inspections, scheduling, production planning, and logistics are all managed through our seamlessly integrated online system connected to the Company’s Data Center.
Achieved ISO 22000, FSSC 22000 and HACCP food safety management system certifications, and we meticulously implement hazard analysis and critical control points (HACCP) protocols.
Comprehensive traceability system is in place for all raw materials, controlled by internationally recognized procedures to ensure stable production quality and compliance with food safety and sanitation regulations.

Starting from 2022, Gemfont introduced on-site medical services in compliance with applicable occupational safety and health regulations. Through proactive care mechanisms, health promotion activities and maternity-friendly environments and measures, we ensure our employees feel cared for in all aspects of their physical and mental well-being.

In January 2024, Gemfont obtained ISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Management System certification, which helps us identify potential hazards, continually improve, and strive for zero risk and zero accidents to ensure a safe and healthy workplace and increase employee satisfaction.

Gemfont provides free annual health check-ups for its employees, with 70% of our workforce participating in standard health screenings, which include additional services such as colorectal and liver cancer screenings. Our comprehensive check-ups, including endoscopy and lung CT scans, serve approximately 30% of our employees annually. In addition to disease prevention, we will also enhance employee group life and medical insurance in 2024, offering superior healthcare and protection measures.

A New Chapter In Sustainability

Zhongli Production Logistics Center

The Zhongli Production Logistics Center, which will be officially inaugurated in 2024, has incorporated sustainable environmental principles into its design from the planning stage. Following energy-saving and carbon reduction guidelines, the center is equipped with various systems and facilities, including solar photovoltaic power generation systems. The sustainability management systems implemented here will serve as a benchmark for other Gemfont facilities.
